Exploring China's musical past 10th International CHIME Meeting6 - 9. oktober 2005 AmsterdamSECOND CALL FOR PAPERS
'Exploring China's musical past'
10th International CHIME Meeting
6 to 9 October 2005, Amsterdam
University of Amsterdam / International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS)
/ Royal Tropical Institute
EARLY HOTEL BOOKING RECOMMENDED!!!
The forthcoming 10th CHIME Meeting in Amsterdam coincides with a major
international festival of Chinese music. Given the vast international
attention this event will attract, and the number of visitors and musicians
expected in Amsterdam, we recommend that CHIME participants book a hotel as
early as possible.
Below we recommend some hotels and provide contacts for booking. Please note
that the DEADLINE for sending in ABSTRACTS for paper presentations in the
CHIME meeting expires 15 APRIL.
MUSIC EXHIBITIONS
During the meeting, the Royal Tropical Institute (where CHIME takes place)
hosts an exhibition devoted to the 2,500 year-old Hubei Chime Bells of Zeng
Hou Yi. We are happy to welcome Professor Robert Bagley (Princeton
University NJ), an expert on bronze bells of the Zhou period, as one of the
meeting's keynote speakers. Other exhibitions in October will pay attention
to music of minority peoples in China, and to photography in the realm of
Chinese music.
CONCERTS
Concerts at the Royal Tropical Institute during the CHIME meeting include
performances by the Shanxi Daoists, the Hua Family shawm band, the Hubei
Provincial Chime Bells Ensemble, rural folk singers from Yunnan and Hunan,
sizhu (teahouse music) players from Shanghai, the popular music group Wu
Xing, and several of today¹s leading instrumentalists from Chinese music
conservatories.
MORE MUSIC
Preceding or following CHIME, the Concertgebouw and other venues will host
performances by the Shanghai Kunqu and Jingju troupes, the Beijing Modern
Dance Theatre, the Puppet Theatre Groups of Quanzhou and Jinjiang, the
Chinese National Traditional Orchestra (Beijing) and many other groups. We
recommend, amongst many wonderful events, an intriguing Peking Opera version
of Shakespeare¹s Hamlet (3 October), an evening of shuochang (story-singing)
with some of the finest traditional performers of genres like Suzhou tanci
and jingyun dagu (9th of October), and a concert of Eastern Voices on the
12th of October, featuring a marvellous range of vocal styles from Tibetan
to Mongolian, from Yunnan to Heilongjiang, from traditional to contemporary.
Lovers of pop and rock will be amply served with several DJ performances and
dance night events, and concerts of pop, rock and electronic by Anthony
Wong, Cui Jian, Zu Zhou, Xiao He, Second Hand Roses and others.
STILL MORE
From 1 to 18 October 2005, Amsterdam will be virtually 'sinified'. Outdoor
events include Chinese markets, fireworks, dragon boat races, religious
temple processions and puppet shows (much of this freely accessible). There
wil be major conferences on Chinese science and economy, Chinese sports
events in the Olympic Stadium, contemporary art exhibitions, meetings with
Chinese poets and writers, as well as numerous films, concerts and theatre
events. Those interested in contemporary Chinese music may want to attend
several concerts by Tan Dun (one of the key figures in the festival), and
premiere performances of Chinese symphonic and chamber music by the Nieuw
Ensemble, Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Kronos Quartet, China National
Symphony Orchestra etc.
A full programme in English is on its way on the internet. You can visit the
site-under-construction and already book tickets for a number of events, but
so far only a minor portion of the entire festival is on display:

THEMES OF CHIME / DEADLINES
Two themes will feature in the 10th international CHIME meeting:
1) Exploring China's musical past (on 'reconstruction' and 'reinvention');
2) Audiovisual materials of recent fieldwork on (any kind of) music in China
or among Chinese-speaking communities. Abstracts of up to 300 words for
individual (20-minute) papers are welcomed and should be sent by mail, fax
or e-mail to:
Programme Committee of the 9th CHIME Meeting,

e-mail: chime@wxs.nl, fax: +31-71-5123.183.
Panel proposals (for three or four speakers) are also welcomed, in which
case we ask for a short description of the panel topic as well as for
individual abstracts by the panel participants. ABSTRACTS MUST HAVE REACHED
US BY 15 APRIL 2005 (and not later). Submitters will be informed about our
decisions by the 20th of May. Participants are also welcome to attend the
meeting without giving a presentation. For more info on the meeting, the
themes, Programme Committee, etc, consult the CHIME website at

ACCOMMODATION IN AMSTERDAM
In view of the very tight hotel situation in October, we have pre-reserved a
number of rooms for CHIME participants in the hotels listed below. You are
expected to make your own individual bookings. Usually it suffices to give
your credit card number, and free cancellation remains possible until one,
two or three days before the arrival day. Check this carefully with your
hotel. If you make a reservation PLEASE STATE EXPLICITLY THAT YOU
PARTICIPATE IN CHIME. This may help to get hold of a room, and it will
ensure that you pay no more than the prices stated below.
Please also note the DEADLINE FOR HOTEL BOOKING: 1 JUNE. You can try to
reserve a room also after 1 June, but rooms specifically reserved for CHIME
will be gone after that date.
Situational info: the NH Tropen Hotel is a modern building right at the
conference site, not too far from the Amsterdam zoo. Hotel Nicolaas Witsen
and Hotel Asterisk are closer to the old town centre, in a quiet area in
central Amsterdam, roughly 15 minutes by streetcar (lines 6 and 10) from the
conference site. Both Nicolaas Witsen and Asterisk are within walking
distance from the Leidseplein and the Rembrandtplein, two central areas of
Amsterdam nightlife. Hotel Washington is a cosy family hotel located in the
stately Concertgebouw area, close to the Museum Square where many outdoor
events in the Amsterdam China Festival are planned (especially on the first
of October). It takes ca.15 minutes by streetcar (line 12) from this hotel
to the conference site.
All prices listed below include breakfast and taxes.
